The Group was formed by two sons of Samuel Wright, the Headmaster of the
William Gilbert Boys School in 1908- the same year Scouts was formed
nationally. SamuelWright’s
eldest son, Reginald William Wright was Scoutmaster and Ivan Wright as Troop
Leader. Initially, the Scouts met in the porch of William Gilbert School
until they acquired a building on a farm in Flaxholme.
On September 23rd 1911, Reginald William Wright was fatally
injured whilst out on a night exercise when he fell over a quarry face on
The Chevin. He was aged just 21. A silver bugle was presented to the Group
by the Queens College Cambridge in his memory. The Group also but a black
rim around their red neckers which is still there today. Ivan Wright took
over the position of Scoutmaster in 1912.
Duffield Cub Pack was formed in 1916, the same year they were started
nationally. In the 1920s the Group made its headquarters in a wooden
building on Holloway Road.
In 1962, it was decided that the Scout Headquarters on Holloway Road were in
a very bad state of repair at some 70 years of age. A Mr Bowmer made
available a site behind Kennings Garage off Hall Farm Road for a new
building to be built. In 1965 work was complete and later extended in
1975. At this point, the Duffield Guides and Brownies transferred to this
building and it became known as the ‘Duffield Scout and Guide
Headquarters’.
